Throughout the country, state parks, historic sites, homes, buildings, museums, and similar institutions are struggling to continue operating. Because of general financial problems, many of these institutions are operating on a reduced schedule or in danger of closing. Some are being forced to sell off artifacts and property. Many will not weather these hard times without your help. Places Earth urges everyone to support these vital and important public resources any way you can. Please donate your treasure, time, and talent. Write to your governor and other elected officials telling them to find a way to keep state parks open. It will be your loss. Carcross, in the southwest corner of Yukon is (by some accounts) the fourth or fifth largest town in the Yukon with a population of 431 in 2008. Other lists don't place this unincorporated community in the top ten. Population has been on the rise in recent years. Originally called Caribou Crossing, that name now covers an establishment a few miles north. Human history goes back at least 4,500 years and more recently was a Tlingit and Tagish fishing and hunting camp. The modern history began in 1896, during the Klondike Gold Rush. The town was renamed Carcross in 1904. Carcross is on the east shore of Lake Bennett, beside what is called the shortest river in the world connecting to Lake Nares. The White Pass and Yukon Route Railroad runs through the town. A mile or so north is the Carcross Desert, considered the smallest desert in the world, although it is not a true desert. |
