Throughout the country, state parks, historic sites, homes, buildings, museums, and similar institutions are struggling to continue operating. Because of general financial problems, many of these institutions are operating on a reduced schedule or in danger of closing. Some are being forced to sell off artifacts and property. Many will not weather these hard times without your help. Places Earth urges everyone to support these vital and important public resources any way you can. Please donate your treasure, time, and talent. Write to your governor and other elected officials telling them to find a way to keep state parks open. It will be your loss. Public Service Announcement | Test space for future ad if donations don't increase. |

Flagstaff is the county seat for Coconino County in northwest Arizona. The city of Flagstaff got its name from a Ponderosa Pine flagpole made by a scouting party from Boston celebrating the United States Centennial on July 4, 1876. The city lies on the western edge of the largest contiguous Ponderosa Pine forest in the continental United States. Natural scenic wonders surround the city which lies near the southwestern edge of the Colorado Plateau. A short distance north are the San Francisco Peaks (the highest mountain range in the state of Arizona), Mars Hill is on the west side of town, Sunset Crater Volcano is a short distance northeast and Meteor Crater and hour east. South is Oak Creek Canyon and Sedona and a little further northwest is the Grand Canyon. It's no wonder the city is nicknamed City of Seven Wonders. Old Route 66 runs through the historic section beside the railroad station with it's a Amtrak connection. Also serving the city are State Highway 180, State Highway 89A, I-40, and I-17 The Anglo presence began in 1855 when Lieutenant Edward Fitzgerald Beale stopped here while surveying a road from the Rio Grand in New Mexico to Fort Tejon in California. It was he that was responsible for the flagpole mentioned above. The first permanent settlement was in 1876, when Thomas F. McMillan built a cabin at the base of Mars Hill. By 1886 it was the largest city along the rail line between Albuquerque and the west coast. In 1896, Percival Lowell established what was then one of the finest observatories in the county on Mars Hill. The planet (no longer considered a planet) Pluto and many years later its moon were discovered here along with other important astronomical discoveries. In 1926, Route 66 was completed through Flagstaff, the city was incorporated in 1928, and in 1929, the city's first motel, the Motel Du Beau, was built. Today Flagstaff is a tourist destination and gateway to more than seven wonders. |
