State Parks, Historic Sites, and Museums need your help.

Throughout the country, state parks, historic sites, homes, buildings, museums, and similar institutions are struggling to continue operating. Because of general financial problems, many of these institutions are operating on a reduced schedule or in danger of closing. Some are being forced to sell off artifacts and property. Many will not weather these hard times without your help.

Places Earth urges everyone to support these vital and important public resources any way you can. Please donate your treasure, time, and talent. Write to your governor and other elected officials telling them to find a way to keep state parks open. It will be your loss.

Yuma, Arizona is a forgotten city at the far southwest corner of Arizona and is rich in history. The completion of the "Ocean to Ocean Highway" Bridge in 1915 over the Colorado River at Yuma joined the two coasts by highway. The city is a major rail link and a border crossing lies a few miles south. Irrigation canals cross the area and it is surrounded by productive agricultural lands.

Yuma Main Canal, Arizona side. March 2005. The siphon carries irrigation water under the Colorado River with the entrance end in Imperial County, California. The canal starts at the Imperial Dam and needs to reach the area southeast of the junction of the Colorado and Gila Rivers. Somehow the canal has to cross one of these rivers and since the Colorado River is more stable in its bank, the decision was made to cross the Colorado River at Yuma Crossing.
