Historic Sites and Museums need your help.

Throughout the country, important historic sites, homes, buildings, and museums are in trouble. Because of the recent rise in gasoline prices and the general world-wide financial collapse, historic sites and museums are in danger of closing. Some are being forced to sell off artifacts and property. Most operate on a thin margin and will not weather these hard times without your help.

Places Earth urges everyone to support these vital and important public resources any way you can. Please find a worthy local or distant historic site or museum that is in financial danger and donate your treasure, time, and talent.

In the Gold Country, about nine miles north of Angels Camp, a stone’s throw off Highway 4, is the town of Murphys. This small historic town was founded in 1848 by John and Daniel Murphy. The town began as Murphy's New Diggings and eventually became Murphys. The Murphy brothers were merchants and made a good living "mining the miners." Like so many towns of this era, Murphys was destroyed three times by fire, in 1859, 1874, and 1893. By the time of the 1874 fire, the mines were playing out and the town never returned to its peak. The town includes Old Timers Museum, the Murphys Hotel (California Historical Landmark #267), one of the oldest continually operating hotels in California, and the oldest stone building in Murphys is the Peter L. Traver Building (California Historical Landmark #466). The town is registered as California Historical Landmark #275.

Sheep Ranch Road, a small side street, is the road to Mercer Caverns.
