Throughout the country, state parks, historic sites, homes, buildings, museums, and similar institutions are struggling to continue operating. Because of general financial problems, many of these institutions are operating on a reduced schedule or in danger of closing. Some are being forced to sell off artifacts and property. Many will not weather these hard times without your help. Places Earth urges everyone to support these vital and important public resources any way you can. Please donate your treasure, time, and talent. Write to your governor and other elected officials telling them to find a way to keep state parks open. It will be your loss. | The rugged fog drenched north coast, some times called the "Lost Coast," of California has a beauty very different from the sun drenched beaches of Southern California. Del Norte County is the northern most coastal county in California and has many miles of both rocky and sandy beaches. Crescent City is about the mid-point along the Del Norte coast less than a half hour south of Oregon and about a half hour drive north of Humboldt County. Several state and national parks include some of the coast line of Del Norte County, such as Redwood National Park, Del Norte Coast Redwood State Park, and Tolowa Dunes State Park, the two redwood parks are run as a single unit. Highway 101 runs through Del Norte County, often within sight of the coast allowing spectacular views with view points turn-offs provided. Two light houses provide tours, but neither are easy to reach. Battery Point Light Station sits a short distance off shore and is easily reached at low tide, but at high tide, it's on an island and between tides, access is between waves on a rocky causeway. St. George Reef Lighthouse is several miles off shore and can be reached by helicopter. Much of the coast is lined with coastal redwood trees and a temperate rain forest. |
