State Parks, Historic Sites, and Museums need your help.

Throughout the country, state parks, historic sites, homes, buildings, museums, and similar institutions are struggling to continue operating. Because of general financial problems, many of these institutions are operating on a reduced schedule or in danger of closing. Some are being forced to sell off artifacts and property. Many will not weather these hard times without your help.

Places Earth urges everyone to support these vital and important public resources any way you can. Please donate your treasure, time, and talent. Write to your governor and other elected officials telling them to find a way to keep state parks open. It will be your loss.

Trunk makes it third largest tree on Earth by volume. At ground level, the truck is 40 feet in diameter, the widest known tree. It is not he oldest, there are older Sequoias 1,500 years older, it seems growing conditions at this spot are ideal for Sequoia trees. The Grant was proclaimed the Nation's Christmas Tree by President Calvin Coolidge in 1926. President Dwight D. Eisenhower designated it a National Shrine in 1956, dedicating it to those who died in service to their country.
Volume: 46,608 cubic feet.
Height: 268
Age: 1,700
Weight: 1,254 tons (estimate)
Circumference at base: 107 feet
Diameter: 40 feet
Largest branch (diameter): 4.5 feet
Lowest branch: 129 feet from ground.

California Tree, the top 25 feet were burned away by a lightning started fire in August 1967. Fire fighters were able to extinguish the fire that otherwise would have burned inside the tree for weeks.

Centenial Stump

Fallen Monarch has laid here unchanged for over 100 years. High tannin makes Giant Sequoia wood indigestible to fungi, bacteria, insects, and other decay organisms. This truck has provided shelter and a meeting place for many years.

Rail fence

Just a sapling. In 2,000 years, this might be the world's largest tree.

Visitor Center
Gamlin Cabin, built 1872 by Israel Gamlin, along with brother Thomas, filed a timber claim for 160 acres within Grant Grove. They stayed here until 1878 while grazing cattle in the mountains. The cabin was used by the US Cavalry for storage after General Grant National Park was established in 1890 until 1913. The first park ranger lived in cabin.
