Throughout the country, state parks, historic sites, homes, buildings, museums, and similar institutions are struggling to continue operating. Because of general financial problems, many of these institutions are operating on a reduced schedule or in danger of closing. Some are being forced to sell off artifacts and property. Many will not weather these hard times without your help. Places Earth urges everyone to support these vital and important public resources any way you can. Please donate your treasure, time, and talent. Write to your governor and other elected officials telling them to find a way to keep state parks open. It will be your loss. Parts of Old Highway 80 are scattered beside new Interstate 8 in several places between San Diego, California and Yuma, Arizona. Sections are still used, parts are passable, and other parts are inaccessible. Near the Desert View Tower, much of the old road had to be blasted away to make room for the new road. Here, sections of the old road still run a few feet to a few hundred feet between the man-made canyons. Sections of the old road continue through south Imperial County and south San Diego County. The Old Highway 80 crossed the Colorado River at the Ocean to Ocean Bridge near Yuma, Arizona. The old Inspection Station still stands near the Arizona border needing some attention. |
