Ballarat was established in 1897 as a mining camp and supply center for local mining operations, particularly the Radcliff Mine in Pleasant Canyon. It was optomistically named after a prosperous gold producing area in Victoria,
Austrailia. At its peak, Ballarat had a population of 500. Ballarat supported 7 saloons, 3 hotels, a Wells Fargo Station, Post Office, school, Jail, and
Morgue. Ballarat declined rapidly after the Ratcliff Mine closed in 1905. The Post Office closed in September 1917. Ballarat is now a ghost town along one of the highways leading to Death Valley. Ballarat is located along the Trona-Wildrose Road between Trona and Death Valley, about three miles east of the road. |
