The tiny community of Boron is filled with history and well worth a stop. Boron is off State Highway 58, north of Edwards Air Force Base, about mid-way between Mojave and Barstow, in the Mojave Desert. Points of interest in the community of Boron include the Boron Twenty Mule Team Museum, the Saxon Aerospace Museum, Grandpa 53, and don't miss Desert Discoveries. About ten miles west is the Borax Visitor Center.
The Boron Twenty Mule Team Museum includes exhibits on the famous 20 mule teams, boron production in the Mojave Desert, and is also the Chamber of Commerce for the town of Boron. There are indoor and outdoor exhibits including a Santa Fe Railroad Depot. Adjacent to The Boron Twenty Mule Team Museum is the Saxon Aerospace Museum. which includes an F-4C Phantom fighter jet. The Saxon Aerospace Museum has received increased visitation since the museums at Edwards Air Force Base are now restricted because of the current heightened alert status of the US Military.
Across the street is the dump truck Grandpa 53. This very large truck, once used in the mining of boron, is now dwarfed by the even larger trucks currently in use. In fact, the Grandpa 53 would fit inside the bed of the larger trucks now in use.
On the way into town, along Boron Avenue, you may enjoy shopping at Desert Discoveries, a rock and mineral shop that is the exclusive vender of Ulexite.
