Throughout the country, state parks, historic sites, homes, buildings, museums, and similar institutions are struggling to continue operating. Because of general financial problems, many of these institutions are operating on a reduced schedule or in danger of closing. Some are being forced to sell off artifacts and property. Many will not weather these hard times without your help. Places Earth urges everyone to support these vital and important public resources any way you can. Please donate your treasure, time, and talent. Write to your governor and other elected officials telling them to find a way to keep state parks open. It will be your loss. Public Service Announcement | Test space for future ad if donations don't increase. |

I discovered this abandoned mining facility in southern Kern County, just west of Edwards Airforce Base. Ezra Hamilton bought the land to supply a better quality clay for his pottery company in Los Angeles during the late 1870s. In 1896, Hamilton discovered gold in his clay and named the mine the Lida Mine. The Tropico Mining and Milling Company bought the mine in 1908. The Brothers Clifford and Cecil Burton started as employees and became owners, renaming the mine Burton's Tropico Gold Mine. The mine closed in 1917 because of WWI and reopened in the 1930's, then closed again in 1942 because of WWII. In 1956, the mine became unprofitable and it was closed. In 1958, the Settle family acquired the land and brought in additional structure to use as a tourist attraction, but this venture failed. I found a web site that described tours during the winter, but when I visited in February 2004, it was totally closed and there was no evidence of activity other than a sign offering the site for Motion Picture location work. It is possible that the place may be open now, but I can no official visitation information. To find Tropico Mine, exit California Highway 14 at Rosamond Boulevard and turn west. After three miles, turn right onto Mojave Tropico Road and you will see Tropico Mine straight ahead. |

| After stopping at Tropico Mine, continue along Mojave Tropico Road and the name will change to Silver Queen Road and eventually return to California Highway 14. Along this scenic drive, you will see a number of smaller mines, some are still in production. |
