Historic Sites and Museums need your help.

Throughout the country, important historic sites, homes, buildings, and museums are in trouble. Because of the recent rise in gasoline prices and the general world-wide financial collapse, historic sites and museums are in danger of closing. Some are being forced to sell off artifacts and property. Most operate on a thin margin and will not weather these hard times without your help.

Places Earth urges everyone to support these vital and important public resources any way you can. Please find a worthy local or distant historic site or museum that is in financial danger and donate your treasure, time, and talent.

The Chatsworth community volunteered their labor to build The Pioneer Church on donated land in 1903. At the time of its construction, it was the only church in the northwest San Fernando Valley. It was also a meeting place for other community functions and for a high school. The Methodist Episcopal Church, later renamed Chatsworth Methodist Church, was left behind by a growing congregation. In 1965, the church was threatened with demolition when the Chatsworth Historical Society and the community worked with Oakwood Memorial Park to move the church from its original location at 10051 Topanga Canyon Boulevard to its new home at Oakwood Memorial Park. Long time residents Roy Rogers and Dale Evans donated the first thousand dollars to the cause of moving the church. The church has ben home to the congregation of Saint Mary the Virgin Anglican-Rite Catholic Church since 1981.

The church is open for tours sponsored by the Chatsworth Historical Society the first Sunday of each month from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. There is a regular Sunday service at 10:00 am.

Location: The west end of Lassen in Chatsworth

Photo Date: 1-3-04. Many of the grave markers were still decorated from Christmas.
