The Hollywood bowl is an outdoor amphitheater that has come to symbolize Southern California. The Southern California climate allows for popular summer concerts at "The Bowl." The bowl itself is actually a natural canyon (Bolton Canyon) and not the curving structure. The first audiences sat on simple wooden benches. The Hollywood Bowl has actually had several bandshells, prosceniums, over the years since the first performance in 1922. Some bandshells were temporary structures, lasting only a season or two. Two bandshells were designed by Lloyd Wright, eldest son of Frank Lloyd Wright. Hunt is responsible for one shell, The current bandshell, or acoustical shell, designed by Myron Hunt, was constructed in 1926 or 1929. The acoustics of the Hollywood Bowl bandshell have never been perfect. The giant fiberglass spheres hanging near the stage, Designed by Frank Gehry, were installed in 1980 to improve the bowl's acoustics. Following a controversial decision, the 1929 shell was replaced between the 2003 and 2004 seasons. The new shell is considered to have better acoustics. This history has some holes which I hope to research soon. These photos were taken on November 15, 1997. |
