State Parks, Historic Sites, and Museums need your help.

Throughout the country, state parks, historic sites, museums, and similar institutions are struggling to continue operating. Because of general financial problems, many of these institutions are operating on a reduced schedule or in danger of closing. Some are being forced to sell off artifacts and property. Many will not weather these hard times without your help.

Places Earth urges everyone to support these vital and important public resources any way you can. Please donate your treasure, time, and talent. Write to your governor and other elected officials telling them to find a way to keep state parks open. It will be your loss.

For many years, the Lowery's California Center was a quiet get-away a few minutes from the center of the rapid pace of Los Angeles. The center included restaurants, gardens, and a tour of Lawry's Spice packing plant.
Sadly, it closed in the early 1990s. Seven years later, it reopened, a shadow of it's former self, but still a pleasant place to get away. Now opperated by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, a State Agency, the facility's new name is the Los Angeles River Center and Gardens. The historic buildings surrounding the gardens provide space for local community groups and activities and serves as a center for Los Angeles River restoration. This web site's author has tried twice to visit and both times it was closed for a special event.
Lawry's California Center/Los Angeles River Center is located at 570 West Avenue 26. at the corner of San Fernando Road and Avenue 26, City of Los Angeles. Directions: from the 5 South: take Pasadena Avenue exit, north. Turn left at Avenue26. The entrance is two blocks north of Figueroa Street on the left. From the 5 North: take Avenue 26 exit. From 110 North: take North Figueroa exit, turn right. At Avenue 26 turn left to entrance. From 110 South: take the Avenue 26exit, turn right to entrance on the left.
