Old Zoo picnic Area

Historic Sites and Museums need your help.

Throughout the country, important historic sites, homes, buildings, and museums are in trouble. Because of the recent rise in gasoline prices and the general world-wide financial collapse, historic sites and museums are in danger of closing. Some are being forced to sell off artifacts and property. Most operate on a thin margin and will not weather these hard times without your help.

Places Earth urges everyone to support these vital and important public resources any way you can. Please find a worthy local or distant historic site or museum that is in financial danger and donate your treasure, time, and talent.

Old Zoo picnic Area

From 1912 to 1965, the Los Angeles Zoo was located in a small canyon in Griffith Park, near the Marry-Go-Round and about two miles south of its current location. Today, the former grounds of the zoo are a picnic area. Many of the enclosures and constructions which were built in the 1930s by County Relief workers and Works Progress Administration (WPA) crews still exist and serve as a background for this quiet and isolated picnic area.

The picnic area is just a little hard to find, and well it should be to preserve this historic site. From Crystal Springs Drive/Griffith Park Drive, turn west at Griffith Park Drive (this is not a typo, heading north, the name Griffith Park Drive makes a hard left as the pavement continues straight and changes name to Crystal Springs Drive. If going south, watch for the Griffith Park Drive sign and turn right). Watch closely for the sign a few hundred feet after the turn. The parking area is on the left. The picnic area is not clearly marked and as often as I've visited, I still have trouble finding it.
