Historic Sites and Museums need your help.

Throughout the country, important historic sites, homes, buildings, and museums are in trouble. Because of the recent rise in gasoline prices and the general world-wide financial collapse, historic sites and museums are in danger of closing. Some are being forced to sell off artifacts and property. Most operate on a thin margin and will not weather these hard times without your help.

Places Earth urges everyone to support these vital and important public resources any way you can. Please find a worthy local or distant historic site or museum that is in financial danger and donate your treasure, time, and talent.

Designed by Lloyd Wright, son of architect Frank Lloyd Wright, the Wayfarers Chapel sits on the Palos Verdes Peninsula overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It has become a favorite wedding location. The 3 1/2-acre site and the cornerstone were dedicated on July 16, 1949 and completed in 1951 and followed the philosophy and theology of The Swedenborgian Church. It was built on a sacred site within a redwood forest using glass, Palos Verdes stone and redwood in harmony with the site. The blue terra cotta roof tile was selected to match the blue sky.

There is much symbolism in the design. The circles represent the oneness of God, the circle of life and our striving toward wholeness. The 30/60-degree angles are reminiscent of snowflakes, crystals and tree branches. Water symbolizes divine truth and the triangular shape of the pool symbolizes the Trinity.

Wayfarers Chapel is located at 5755 Palos Verdes Drive South; Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275; (310) 377-7919.

The tower was completed in December 1954. The cross of gold leaf rises 50 feet above the Chapel floor. Photo Date: 5-5-01.
