State Parks, Historic Sites, and Museums need your help.

Throughout the country, state parks, historic sites, homes, buildings, museums, and similar institutions are struggling to continue operating. Because of general financial problems, many of these institutions are operating on a reduced schedule or in danger of closing. Some are being forced to sell off artifacts and property. Many will not weather these hard times without your help.

Places Earth urges everyone to support these vital and important public resources any way you can. Please donate your treasure, time, and talent. Write to your governor and other elected officials telling them to find a way to keep state parks open. It will be your loss.

The Red's Meadow Shuttle departs from Mammoth Lake in Mono County and immediately crosses the summit of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and enters Madera County, the water shed of the Middle Fork of the San Joaquin River, and Red Meadows.

The main activity in Red Meadow is hiking and there are many beautiful trails to choose from. A short trail takes visitors to Devils Postpile which is in Devils Postpile National Monument which is surrounded by Inyo National Forest. Most of the other trials cris-cross in and out of Devils Postpile National Monument and Inyo National Forest. Two pleasant and scenic trails are to Minaret Falls and Rainbow Falls. The Pacific Creast National Scenic Trail passes through and it is also part of the Ansel Adams Wilderness.

The trail head to Minaret Falls begins near Devils Postpile and this basalt outcropping marks one end of the first bridge over the San Joaquin River.

Once across the bridge to Minaret Falls, the hiker encounters this meadow where you can often see deer.
The Minarets, a formation of peaks west of the meadow.
