State Parks, Historic Sites, and Museums need your help.

Throughout the country, important state parks, historic sites, homes, buildings, and museums are in trouble. Because of the recent rise in gasoline prices and the general world-wide financial collapse, state parks, historic sites, and museums are in danger of closing. Some are being forced to sell off artifacts and property. Most operate on a thin margin and will not weather these hard times without your help.

Places Earth recently encountered closed state parks in Arizona and California is threatening to close all state parks. The story is similar throughout the country.

Places Earth urges everyone to support these vital and important public resources any way you can. Please find a worthy local or distant historic site or museum that is in financial danger and donate your treasure, time, and talent. Write to your governor and other elected officials telling them to find a way to keep these parks open. It will be your loss.

The Old School House Museum commemorates the rich history of the area around Lee Vining, a small town astride Highway 395 on the west bank of Mono Lake and on the east side of the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. The school house contains numerous exhibits on local history while outside are displays of larger mining and farming equipment as well as the famous Upside-Down House built by former actress Nellie Bly.

The Mono Lake School House was originally built near De Chambeau Creek, about five miles north, in 1921. The last class recessed in June of 1942 after a new school was built in the late 1930s. At least for families made the old building their home. The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power bought the land and planned to demolish the building in 1987. Concerned area residents began the Mono Basin Historical Society and mobilized to save the building. The LA DWP donated the schoolhouse to the Historical Society and various individuals and groups worked to move the building to its current location overlooking Mono Lake on the east side of Lee Vining. The School House Museum was dedicated in August of 1989.
