State Parks, Historic Sites, and Museums need your help.

Throughout the country, state parks, historic sites, homes, buildings, museums, and similar institutions are struggling to continue operating. Because of general financial problems, many of these institutions are operating on a reduced schedule or in danger of closing. Some are being forced to sell off artifacts and property. Many will not weather these hard times without your help.

Places Earth urges everyone to support these vital and important public resources any way you can. Please donate your treasure, time, and talent. Write to your governor and other elected officials telling them to find a way to keep state parks open. It will be your loss.

The Orange County Fair is held from mid-July to Mid-August in Costa Mesa.

Orange County was created in 1889. Soon after the Orange County Community Fair Corporation was formed and held its first small fair in Santa Ana in 1890 included a horse race and a few exhibits. The Orange County Fair Association, Inc., took over the Fair in 1894. Early fairs were primarily livestock exhibitions and horse races, but a "carnival of products" was added about 1900 and the Fair became an annual event. After World War I the fair was held in Huntington Beach for two years and then back to Santa Ana. Fair administration was assumed by the Orange County Farm Bureau in 1916. The first OC Fair Board was elected in 1925 and the Fair moved to Anaheim and a rodeo and carnival were added. In the late 1940s, the state formed the 32nd District Agricultural Association and it began operating the fair. The state purchased land occupied by the Santa Ana Army Air Base and set a section aside for the fairgrounds. The fair was first held at this new permanent site in1949. In 1953, the City of Costa Mesa was incorporated and the fiarground fell within its borders and the fair has been held at this location to the present. The state is considering selling the site in an effort to balance the budget (Feb. 2010).
