Places, Earth Fairmount Park

State Parks, Historic Sites, and Museums need your help. Throughout the country, state parks, historic sites, homes, buildings, museums, and similar institutions are struggling to continue operating. Because of general financial problems, many of these institutions are operating on a reduced schedule or in danger of closing. Some are being forced to sell off artifacts and property. Many will not weather these hard times without your help. Places Earth urges everyone to support these vital and important public resources any way you can. Please donate your treasure, time, and talent. Write to your governor and other elected officials telling them to find a way to keep state parks open. It will be your loss. Fairmount Park

Fairmount Park is the largest park and the second oldest in Riverside. Included in the 190 acres is the 40 acre Lake Evans. The park opened on Arbor Day, April 9, 1898, 15 after the incorporation of the City of Riverside. The park was designed by the sons of Frederick Law Olmsted, the designer of Central Park in New York. Along the southeast shore of the lake is Stewarts Boat House where pedal boat rentals allow enjoyment of the lake. Along the northwest shore is a Water Buffalo, designed and manufactured by Food Machinery and Chemical Corporation, aside Lake Evans, across the street from the American Legion Post. A small palm tree covered island sets in the western end of the lake.
