State Parks, Historic Sites, and Museums need your help.

Throughout the country, state parks, historic sites, homes, buildings, museums, and similar institutions are struggling to continue operating. Because of general financial problems, many of these institutions are operating on a reduced schedule or in danger of closing. Some are being forced to sell off artifacts and property. Many will not weather these hard times without your help.

Places Earth urges everyone to support these vital and important public resources any way you can. Please donate your treasure, time, and talent. Write to your governor and other elected officials telling them to find a way to keep state parks open. It will be your loss.

Calico Ghost Town

I've been to Calico Ghost Town four times. Once with my family, once with friends from work (8-26-89), with my brother the same day (12-26-97) that we visited Santa's Village for its last season, and the last time on February 29, 2004 I took my wife for her first visit. I will add images from this last visit soon.

Calico Ghost Town is just off Interstate 15, about 10 miles east of Barstow. It is a combination of original buildings, restored and recreated buildings, and modern construction in the theme of the others. There are actual silver mines, some open, some closed. There is a mine train ride that children and adults can enjoy. There are a number of shops, my favorite is the rock and fossil shop. There are shows and a regular gun fight.

Mr. Knotts, of Knotts Berry Farm, once owned this town and harvested several buildings for use in his famous Knotts Berry Farm and Ghost Town. Still, enough buildings remain to make an enjoyable stop while passing though California's Mojave Desert between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. About 5 miles east is the Calico Early Man Site.
