Throughout the country, state parks, historic sites, homes, buildings, museums, and similar institutions are struggling to continue operating. Because of general financial problems, many of these institutions are operating on a reduced schedule or in danger of closing. Some are being forced to sell off artifacts and property. Many will not weather these hard times without your help. Places Earth urges everyone to support these vital and important public resources any way you can. Please donate your treasure, time, and talent. Write to your governor and other elected officials telling them to find a way to keep state parks open. It will be your loss. Public Service Announcement | Test space for future ad if donations don't increase. |

The Lincoln Memorial Shrine seems oddly located in Redlands, California. English born Robert Watchorn came to the United States in 1880 and later came west. An admire of President Abraham Lincoln, Robert Watchorn and his wife Alma dedicated the shrine on February 12, 1932 as a memorial, research center, and repository, museum, library, and archives. The memorial was also in memory to their son Emory Ewart who died in 1921 from injuries he received in World War I. Robert died in 1944.
California Architect Elmer Grey designed the Lincoln Memorial Shrine in 1932. The original design was of an octagon shrine in the center and a 75 foot patio extending from each side. The patios were not added until 1937. The reinforced concrete building is faced with Bedford Indiana limestone plates inscribed with excerpts from Lincoln's speaches. Watchorn had hoped to expand the facility, but the Great Depression, World War II, and Watchorn's death ended this dream. Finally, on February 12, 1998, two new wings were added to where the patios had been with the fountains and other features moved forward.
The interior of the shrine contains murals, sculptures, paintings, books, and artifacts. Most notable items are Normal Rockwell's Thoughts on Peace on Lincoln's Birthday and John Rogers' sculpture Council of War.
Two annual events include the Sunday before Lincoln's birthday and on Lincoln's birthday.
The Lincoln Memorial shrine is part of the A. K. Smiley Library.
