Throughout the country, state parks, historic sites, homes, buildings, museums, and similar institutions are struggling to continue operating. Because of general financial problems, many of these institutions are operating on a reduced schedule or in danger of closing. Some are being forced to sell off artifacts and property. Many will not weather these hard times without your help. Places Earth urges everyone to support these vital and important public resources any way you can. Please donate your treasure, time, and talent. Write to your governor and other elected officials telling them to find a way to keep state parks open. It will be your loss. Public Service Announcement | Test space for future ad if donations don't increase. |

The Aircraft Carrier Midway served for 47 years from World War II to first Arab War (Desert Storm) - the longest tour of any US aircraft carrier. Midway was commissioned in 1945 as the largest ship in the world and the fist ship too big for the Panama Canal. She was decommissioned in San Diego in 1992 and opened as a museum in 2004. Built at a cost of $90,000.00, she produced 212,000 horsepower. The ship is 1,001 feet long, 258 feet wide, has a 4.02-acre 3-inch thick flight deck, has 18 decks, and has 18-foot diameter propellers. The crew consisted of 600 engineers. 200 pilots, 225 cooks, 40 corpsmen, 2 physicians, and one dentist. The term "Midway Magic" was developed to describe the almost unreal good luck this ship experienced. The ship contains many exhibits including a number of Navel aircraft. An audio tour is included with admission and contains a wealth of information. Hours: 10:00 - 5:00, last entrance 4:00. Daily except Thanksgiving and Christmas. The Island (the tower on top) closes about 3:30. Address: 910 N Harbor Dr San Diego, CA 92132 (619) 544-9600 www.midway.org Location: Old Navy Pier Embarcadero San Diego |
