State Parks, Historic Sites, and Museums need your help.Places Earth recently encountered closed state parks in Arizona and California is threatening to close all state parks. The story is similar throughout the country. Places Earth urges everyone to support these vital and important public resources any way you can. Please find a worthy local or distant historic site or museum that is in financial danger and donate your treasure, time, and talent. Write to your governor and other elected officials telling them to find a way to keep these parks open. It will be your loss. Public Service Announcement |

Once called Spanishtown, Half Moon Bay is the oldest city in San Mateo County. The historical society offers a Walking Tour map. The usual quiet town fills with visitors to the annual Pumpkin Festival. Before Europeans arrived, Costanoan Indians lived here beside the Pilarcitos Creek. Following Portola's expedition in 1769, Mission San Francisco de Asis was founded in 1776 and this began European developement of the area. Two land grants, Rancho Arroyo de los Pilarcitos (Ranch San Benito) and El Corral de Tierra, became the beginnings of Spanishtown. In 1853, Anglos came and the town of Half Moon Bay developed by 1874. The earthquake of 1906 destroyed all the remaining adobe and brick structures, the railroad came in 1908 and the highway twelve years later. Official incorporation of the city occurred in 1959 and today that city maintains its old world charm while only an hour drive south of San Francisco. |

| The Methodist Episcopal Church was built in 1872 and is one of the oldest Protestant churches in San Mateo County. The building is in the Gothic Revival style and is most noted for its divided fan window set in an ogee curve. San Francisco Architect Charles Geddes is credited for the design and it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The church is located at the corner of Johnson and Miramontes Streets. |
