Throughout the country, state parks, historic sites, homes, buildings, museums, and similar institutions are struggling to continue operating. Because of general financial problems, many of these institutions are operating on a reduced schedule or in danger of closing. Some are being forced to sell off artifacts and property. Many will not weather these hard times without your help. Places Earth urges everyone to support these vital and important public resources any way you can. Please donate your treasure, time, and talent. Write to your governor and other elected officials telling them to find a way to keep state parks open. It will be your loss. Public Service Announcement | Test space for future ad if donations don't increase. |

Since 1929, the Santa Barbara Courthouse has been an architectural jewel in the heart of the city. Following a devastating earthquake in 1925, the city lay in ruin. Inspired by the old Casa de la Guerra, an aesthetic plan was devised for the city to follow Mediterranean design including red tile roofs. The centerpiece of this new Santa Barbara was a new Courthouse. Designed by William Mooser III, the $1.5 million steel frame structure was completed in 1929. The building plan is a backwards J shape. This shape encloses a sunken garden which provides settings for weddings and other festivities. In August of 2004, I stumbled into a Democratic political rally in the garden. The front of the Courthouse, facing Anacapa Street includes a fountain to the left of a large arched opening leading to the garden. The exterior of the building is covered with architectural details including a turret, bridge to the old jail, arches, columns, wrought-iron railings, lighting fixtures, and the topper (literally) is a the bell tower rising to 85 feet which also provides an observation deck. The interior is just as grand as the exterior with arches, vaulted ceilings, murals, and an unusual half indoor/half outdoor circular stair facing the garden. The meeting room is a tour stop with its murals of California history. The Courthouse is open during regular business hours and a tour is scheduled at 2:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday and Friday at 10:30 a.m. Verify time if you plan to visit. The tower closes early, plan to arrive by 3:30 or 4 p.m. at the latest. Address: 1100 Block of Anacapa St Santa Barbara, CA 93101-2099 Visitor booth: 805-962-6464 |
