State Parks, Historic Sites, and Museums need your help.

Throughout the country, state parks, historic sites, homes, buildings, museums, and similar institutions are struggling to continue operating. Because of general financial problems, many of these institutions are operating on a reduced schedule or in danger of closing. Some are being forced to sell off artifacts and property. Many will not weather these hard times without your help.

Places Earth urges everyone to support these vital and important public resources any way you can. Please donate your treasure, time, and talent. Write to your governor and other elected officials telling them to find a way to keep state parks open. It will be your loss.

Santa Barbara Maritime Museum is a young museum, opened July 29, 2000, located at the Harbor's Santa Barbara Waterfront Center. The building, formerly known as the Naval Reserve Center, was built by the Works Project Administration in the late 1930s and early 1940s. It was used as a U. S. Navy training facility between 1942 and 1995.

In addition to the model boats and artifacts that are typical to maritime museums, this museum has several fine exhibits on the Channel Islands just a few miles offshore. The museum also has exhibits to the offshore oil production also found in the Santa Barbara Channel. Upstairs is a theater that on the day we visited, was showing a surfacing film. Since this is a new museum, more exhibits are planned for the near future.
