Throughout the country, state parks, historic sites, homes, buildings, museums, and similar institutions are struggling to continue operating. Because of general financial problems, many of these institutions are operating on a reduced schedule or in danger of closing. Some are being forced to sell off artifacts and property. Many will not weather these hard times without your help. Places Earth urges everyone to support these vital and important public resources any way you can. Please donate your treasure, time, and talent. Write to your governor and other elected officials telling them to find a way to keep state parks open. It will be your loss. Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk is a classic seaside amusement park featuring rides, entertainment, games, food, and shops. The park runs between the City of Santa Cruz and the beautiful Monterey Bay. This historic park turned 100 years old in 2007. Rides and attractions include Sky Glider, Giant Dipper, Sea Swings, Hauted Castle, Casino, Merry-Go-Round, Pirate Ship, Cave Train Adventure, and many more. A stage on the beach presents summer music and venders sell food. Today the park offers, 35 rides, three arcades, 36 food vendors, electronic shooting gallery, indoor miniature golf and laser tag, and over 15 gift shops. This historic park turned 100 years old in 2007. The road to the Boardwalk began in 1865 when John Leibrandt opened a public bathhouse near the mouth of the San Lorenzo River followed by more. Other concessions sprang up including restaurants and shops. Late in the 1890s, Fred W. Swanton began planning a casino and boardwalk. The Casino opened in 1904 but was destroyed by fire after only 22 months. Swanton immediately began rebuilding bigger and better with a ballroom, the Plunge (indoor swimming pool), a pleasure pier, and boardwalk. On June 22, 1907, the first anniversary of the fire, the new attractions opened. Within months the first ride, a roller-coaster, opened followed by many more. The 1930s and 1940s were slow, but the park rebounded in the 1950s and 1960s. The Sky Glider, a scenic overhead ride, was added in 1967. Further changes and additions keep the park fresh and the public coming back. |
