State Parks, Historic Sites, and Museums need your help.

Throughout the country, state parks, historic sites, homes, buildings, museums, and similar institutions are struggling to continue operating. Because of general financial problems, many of these institutions are operating on a reduced schedule or in danger of closing. Some are being forced to sell off artifacts and property. Many will not weather these hard times without your help.

Places Earth urges everyone to support these vital and important public resources any way you can. Please donate your treasure, time, and talent. Write to your governor and other elected officials telling them to find a way to keep state parks open. It will be your loss.

Juan Camarillo bought in 1876, a land grant for 10,000 acres with water. This beautifully restored Victorian ranch home was built in 1892 by Adolfo Camarillo and his wife. Adolfo assumed operations of the ranch upon the death of his father, Juan who obtained the ranch from the Jose Pedro Ruiz family. Adolfo was referred to as the last Spanish Don. Adolfo Camarillodied in1958.
The 6,000 square foot, 15 room, three-story home was designed by archiects Herman Anlauf and Franklin Ward. It is in the Queen Anne style. The house took a year to build.
The ranch is famous for originating the Camarillo White Horse, a bread of pure white hoses. The 4.5 acre site also includes the barn and other smaller buildings.
The museum is along side the 101 Freeway in Camarillo at 201 Camarillo Ranch Road. Going north, take the Flynn Road exit and turn right onto Mission Oaks Boulevard. Going south, take the Dawson Drive exit, turn right onto Dawson Drive and right again onto Mission Oaks Boulevard. Turn left at Camarillo Ranch Road.
We visited the first time on the day that the docents were decorating the house for the Holidays. We hope to return after the house has been undecorated. These photos were taken November 22, 2003.
