Throughout the country, state parks, historic sites, homes, buildings, museums, and similar institutions are struggling to continue operating. Because of general financial problems, many of these institutions are operating on a reduced schedule or in danger of closing. Some are being forced to sell off artifacts and property. Many will not weather these hard times without your help. Places Earth urges everyone to support these vital and important public resources any way you can. Please donate your treasure, time, and talent. Write to your governor and other elected officials telling them to find a way to keep state parks open. It will be your loss. Public Service Announcement | Test space for future ad if donations don't increase. |

Queen Ka'ahumanu Center is a Hawaiian version of a typical mall. Once open air, it now has a canvas roof that is not attached to the walls which allows the flow of air while still providing shade and protection from rain. The mall has many of the chains one would expect in any US mall, but still is home to local businesses. Named for Queen Ka'ahumanu, there is a historical exhibit about her near the center of the mall. The Queen's stage presents Hawaiian music by local musicians several evenings a week. Location: 275 West Ka'ahumanu Avenue, Suite 1200 Kahului, Hawaii 96732 808.877.3369 Queen Ka'ahumanu Center hours: Monday-Saturday: 9:30am-9:00pm Sunday: 10:00am-5:00pm |

| Queen Kaahumanu was the favorite wife of King Kamehameha. Queen Kaahumanu was born in Hana in March of 1768. She was the daughter of Ke'eaumoku, warrior and advisor to King Kamehameha, and Namahana, former wife of Kamehameha Nui - King of Maui. At the age of thirteen, she became on of the many wives of King Kamehameha. Her wisdom and keen political insight made her his favorite wife and most trusted advisor. King Kamehameha made her kuhina nui (prime minister) to his son Liholiho when he inherited the throne following the king's death in 1819. She ruled as an equal making her the first female monarch of Hawaii. She made changes to tradition and laws which eliminated the rigid class system and eased taxes. She embraced Christianity when missionaries arrived and passed laws against murder, theft, adultery, and smoking. Queen Kaahumanu died in May of 1832 at the age of 64. Her remarkable rule lasted thirteen years. |
