Throughout the country, state parks, historic sites, homes, buildings, museums, and similar institutions are struggling to continue operating. Because of general financial problems, many of these institutions are operating on a reduced schedule or in danger of closing. Some are being forced to sell off artifacts and property. Many will not weather these hard times without your help. Places Earth urges everyone to support these vital and important public resources any way you can. Please donate your treasure, time, and talent. Write to your governor and other elected officials telling them to find a way to keep state parks open. It will be your loss. Public Service Announcement | Test space for future ad if donations don't increase. |

The heads of four US presidents were carved into the granite of the Black Hills. Carving, 905 with dynamite, began on August 10, 1927. It took fourteen years of sporadic work to complete, about six and a half years of actual carving, the rest for fund raising. The presidents depicted are Washington,
Jefferson, T. Roosevelt, and Lincoln. The Sculptor was Gutzon Borglum assisted by his son, Lincoln. Doane Robinson conceive the idea for carvings in the Black Hills to draw people to his state. In August of 1924 he contacted Gutzon Borglum who was working on another project. John Boland was instrumental in raising funds. Congressman William Williamson worked to get money appropriated from Congress and Senator Peter Norbeck also worked to keep the project funded. The mountain was named for Charles E. Rushmore, a lawyer investigating mining claims in the Black Hills in 1885. Although your author has not seen it yet, the nightly lighting ceremony is described as spectacular. Mount Rushmore is located about 23 miles southwest of Rapid City in the Black Hills of Southwest South Dakota. If coming from I-90, exit at Rapid City and take Highway 16 southwest to Keystone, and then Highway 244 to Mount Rushmore. If coming from the south, take Highway 385 north to Highway 244. |
