Possibly the most notable point of interest in Pioneer Plaza (sometimes called Pioneer Park) is Trail Drive, a large multi-piece bronze sculpture of a cattle drive by artist Robert Summers of Glen Rose, Texas. The number of larger-than-life longhorn cattle is debated and seems to be increasing, this author has read of 40, 41, and 70, but counted 50 and his wife counted 51, in addition to the three horses and riders. A bronze map of the cattle drives is placed at the southeast corner of Young Street and South Griffin Street adjacent to the sculpture. A small pond is crossed by some of the figures as the trail meanders down a small hill along the Shawnee Trail of the 1850s. The slightly over four acre plaza was created from a parking lot about 1995. The plaza is located at the southeast corner of Young Street and South Griffin Street, a short walk from Dealey Plaza, adjacent to the Dallas Convention Center. |
