Throughout the country, state parks, historic sites, homes, buildings, museums, and similar institutions are struggling to continue operating. Because of general financial problems, many of these institutions are operating on a reduced schedule or in danger of closing. Some are being forced to sell off artifacts and property. Many will not weather these hard times without your help. Places Earth urges everyone to support these vital and important public resources any way you can. Please donate your treasure, time, and talent. Write to your governor and other elected officials telling them to find a way to keep state parks open. It will be your loss. Antelope Island is the largest island in the Great Salt Lake, 15 miles long and 4 1/2 miles wide, highest point is Frary Point at 6,596 above sea level. It is reached over a seven mile causeway from the mainland near Syracuse. The 28,022 acre island includes wilderness, camp sites, a Visitor Center, and the historic Fielding Garr Ranch. In addition to antelope, deer, coyotes, bighorn sheep, shorebirds, waterfowl, and smaller animals, a herd of 600 American bison live on the island. The island was first occupied by people over 6,000 years ago and was first visited by Europeans in 1845 when John C. Fremont and Kit Carson explored. The Fielding Garr Ranch was established in 1848 and the house is the oldest Anglo built structure still standing in Utah. Parts of the island are comprised of rocks agong the oldest on earth at 2.7 billion years. Tufa can be seen from Buffalo Point Trail. Water is produced in 40 major springs. The campgrounds located on the northwest shore of Antelope Island provide a wonderful site for viewing sunsets over the Great Salt Lake. Trails and water activities are available. The park was established in 1981.
