State Parks, Historic Sites, and Museums need your help.

Throughout the country, state parks, historic sites, homes, buildings, museums, and similar institutions are struggling to continue operating. Because of general financial problems, many of these institutions are operating on a reduced schedule or in danger of closing. Some are being forced to sell off artifacts and property. Many will not weather these hard times without your help.

Places Earth urges everyone to support these vital and important public resources any way you can. Please donate your treasure, time, and talent. Write to your governor and other elected officials telling them to find a way to keep state parks open. It will be your loss.

Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument contains 1.9 million acres of land in southern Utah (a little larger Delaware). It is a vast area between Bryce Canyon National Park and Dixie National Forest on the west, Capitol Reef National Park and Glen Canyon Recreation Area on the east, and Grand Canyon National Park to the south. The geography of the monument is divided into three main regions: the Grand Staircase, the Kaiparowits Plateau, and the Canyons of the Escalante as the terrain descends from the height near Bryce to the canyons leading to the Colorado River. The towns of Big Water, Glendale and Kanab line the southwest side and Escalante and Boulder on the northeast. The Paunsaugunt Plateau and the Paria River dominate the western section of the monument and reveals the geologic progression of the Grand Staircase. Highway 12, on the northwest edge, give a feeling of driving a knife edge with a deep canyon on either side.

Human habitation began about 500 AD and there are several paleontological sites.

It was created in a controversial action by President Bill Clinton in September of 1996 when he designated the area as a National Monument using his authority under the Antiquities Act. This is the largest monument created this way and some argued he overstretched his authority. Environmentalists applauded and developers argued job losses. The dedication was held in Arizona which irritated many in Utah where the entire monument lies. It is also the first monument to be administered by the Bureau of Land Management, rather than the National Park Service.
