State Parks, Historic Sites, and Museums need your help.Places Earth recently encountered closed state parks in Arizona and California is threatening to close all state parks. The story is similar throughout the country. Places Earth urges everyone to support these vital and important public resources any way you can. Please find a worthy local or distant historic site or museum that is in financial danger and donate your treasure, time, and talent. Write to your governor and other elected officials telling them to find a way to keep these parks open. It will be your loss. Public Service Announcement |

Canyonlands National Park lies mostly in San Juan County in southeast Utah. Canyonlands is a relatively young national park, established in 1964. Two rivers, the Green and the Colorado join in the center of the park and divide it into three main areas, Islands in the Sky toward the north, the Maze to the west, and the Needles in the southeast. Each area of the 527 square mile park has unique topography. Island in the Sky is easily reached from US 191 and Moab and The Needles is easily reached from US 191 near Monticello, but The Maze can only be reached by 4-wheel drive by permit over many miles of unpaved roads. Services are almost non-existent in all sections of the park. The park includes many miles of unpaved roads and hiking trails. Visitors to the back-country should be prepared for emergencies and carry all necessary supplies. Canyonlands remains primitive and lies at the heart of the Colorado Plateau which covers the southeast half of Utah, northern half of Arizona, northwest New Mexico, and parts of western Colorado. Features include arches, canyons, river rafting, archeological sites, and unspoiled scenery. |
