State Parks, Historic Sites, and Museums need your help.

Throughout the country, state parks, historic sites, homes, buildings, museums, and similar institutions are struggling to continue operating. Because of general financial problems, many of these institutions are operating on a reduced schedule or in danger of closing. Some are being forced to sell off artifacts and property. Many will not weather these hard times without your help.

Places Earth urges everyone to support these vital and important public resources any way you can. Please donate your treasure, time, and talent. Write to your governor and other elected officials telling them to find a way to keep state parks open. It will be your loss.

The Town of Monticello is in San Juan County in the southeast corner of Utah. Monticello was settled in 1887 by Mormon settlers, but the area already had a history. In the 1800s, fugitives used the isolated mountains and canyons to hide and before them, native groups, including the , lived on these lands. The town was later named Monticello in honor of Thomas Jefferson's estate. Later, miners came in search of gold and silver but results were poor. Monticello, the second largest city in San Juan County, became the county seat in 1895. It was incorporated as a city in 1910. In the 1950s a uranium processing plant was constructed.

Monticello is located at the junction of Hwy 491 (old 666), and Hwy 191. The elevation is 7,069 feet, summer climate is mild and winters are cold.

An unusual storm brought snow in late May, 2008.
