State Parks, Historic Sites, and Museums need your help.

Throughout the country, state parks, historic sites, homes, buildings, museums, and similar institutions are struggling to continue operating. Because of general financial problems, many of these institutions are operating on a reduced schedule or in danger of closing. Some are being forced to sell off artifacts and property. Many will not weather these hard times without your help.

Places Earth urges everyone to support these vital and important public resources any way you can. Please donate your treasure, time, and talent. Write to your governor and other elected officials telling them to find a way to keep state parks open. It will be your loss.

Newspaper Rock is one of the largest petroglyph panel in Utah dating to B.C. to A.D. 1300, about 2000 years, although there is no known way to accurately date rock art. The petroglyph panel is etched into the desert varnish of a sandstone rock wall, and scholars are not sure of their meaning. The figures could be story telling, hunting magic, clan symbols, or something else such as doodling and graffiti. The carvers probably consisted of the Archaic, Basketmaker, Anasazi, Fremont, and Pueblo cultures and later Utah, Navajo, and Anglos contributed. The Navajo call it "Tse' Hane'" meaning "rock that tells a story." The rock is listed on the United States Register of National Historic Places and was declared a state historical monument in 1961.

The site is a very short easy walk from the parking lot off of Utah Route 211 that leads to the Needles section of Canyonlands National Park, about 10 miles west of U S Highway 191, northwest of Monticello.

It is accessible 24 hours a day and there is no fee.
